NES Academic Fellowships in General Practice
The application period for NES Academic Fellowships in General Practice for 2026 - 2027 is now closed. The closing date was 20th April 2026.
Successful candidates have been notified and will start in August 2026.

These fellowships offer unique opportunities for training in academic aspects of general practice, and are ideal for GPs at an early stage of career development contemplating an academic career.

Academic Fellowship in General Practice (more information)
NES Academic Fellowships are fixed term fellowship posts tenable in one of the stated Universities in Scotland. The post is a joint development between NHS Education Scotland (NES) and the Universities in Scotland. The post is suitable for two kinds of applicants.
- Early career applicants who are about to complete or who have completed Specialist Training for General Practice within the preceding 3 years WTE (in other words, we will take account of career breaks and part-time working when calculating this). Early career applicants can request academic time between 0.2FTE and 0.6FTE.
- Post-doctoral applicants intending to apply for a post-doctoral research fellowship. Post-doctoral applicants should be GPs who are about to complete or are within one year of completion of a higher degree (PhD or MD). For these applicants, time since CCT is not applied.

University of Edinburgh - Master of Science in Family Medicine
This pioneering, on-line, distance learning programme is targeted at doctors working in low/middle income countries with limited opportunity for post-graduate study in family medicine. Students working in rural areas are particularly encouraged through the provision of bursaries.
The programme is delivered in partnership with the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India and the International Christian Medical and Dental Association. The programme’s team of tutors are practicing family doctors working in a variety of settings across the world.
Students are taught the principles of family medicine and evidence-based medicine focusing on application to local context as well as relevance to global health and the goal of universal health coverage. On-line learning is complemented by 2 weeks face-to-face teaching, allowing students to meet and form peer-support learning networks which continue beyond completion of the course.
