Professor in Population Science, Centre for Primary Care and Population Research, School of Medicine, University of Dundee
The post will be located within the Quality, Safety and Informatics research group that brings together researchers working in the rapidly developing and overlapping fields of Quality and Safety Improvement, and Informatics and eHealth. At the heart of the group is a multi-disciplinary collaboration to improve clinical and prescribing quality and safety using robust and novel information and communications technologies, appropriately embedded in broader complex interventions. The group currently includes six core funded staff (four professors including this post, one senior lecturer and one lecturer) with associated research and administrative staff.
- Informatics and eHealth records research is one of our two core areas of work, including the development and evaluation of innovative technologies to safely share data across professional and organisational boundaries, for epidemiological purposes and to facilitate behaviour change in users of health web sites.
- Prescribing quality and safety improvement is our second core area of work, including pharmaco-epidemiological work on drug and prescribing safety, the development and robust evaluation of quality and safety improvement interventions built around novel informatics, and organisational research examining the impact of clinical networks and financial incentives for quality.
We also support clinical trial and basic science research through informatics, and facilitate and evaluate quality, safety and health technology interventions implemented by our NHS partners within the Tayside and Scottish Academic Health Sciences Centre. Our current funding includes programme and research grants from the Wellcome Trust, MRC, Chief Scientist Office, Scottish Funding Council, National Institutes of Health Research, NHS Quality Improvement Scotland, Scottish Centre for Telehealth, Connecting for Health, NHS Education Scotland, NHS Tayside, a Scottish Government Health Department National Demonstration Programme and the European Union.

The predictive validity of the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) examination [MRCP(UK)] Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship at the UCL Division of Medical Education, starting BEFORE 1st October 2010. The award will provide stipend of £16,000 per annum, plus UK/EU tuition fees. The studentship is jointly funded by UCL and the Royal College of Physicians of London. Studentship Description Passing the MRCP(UK) examination is a requirement for any UK doctor wishing to progress in their career as a physician. Passing the MRCP(UK) is taken to mean than an individual has the skills and knowledge necessary for training as a physician, and failure, therefore, implies that an individual is lacking in aptitude to develop as a competent physician. The research project will examine the accuracy of these assumptions, asking "is performance on MRCP(UK) related to subsequent performance as a doctor?", using a range of databases and other research techniques.
The PhD is supervised by Professor Chris McManus with Dr Katherine Woolf as second supervisor. The project will involve statistical analysis of large datasets, and the successful applicant will probably have had experience with Excel, Access, SPSS, or other similar software. It is also possible that there will a qualitative component to the research. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their professional and research skills, and UCL runs a range of training courses. They will also have the opportunity to contribute to teaching in the Division.

They should be holding (or expecting) at least a 2:1 honours BSc (or equivalent) in Psychology, Statistics, Medicine, or another social science which has a strong quantitative component (e.g. Epidemiology/ Public Health, Geography).
