BI International Leadership Programme 2011: Invitation to apply
University of Oxford
The University of Oxford would like to invite you to participate in an international collaboration of universities called the Brisbane Initiative. BI was founded by a small group of Heads of primary care departments at a meeting in Brisbane in 2002. The aim of the collaboration is to foster advanced education and leadership skills for primary health care research. Part of this initiative has been the formation of the International Primary Care Research Leadership programme hosted by the Department of Primary Health Care at the University of Oxford, designed to foster and develop future leaders in primary care research. The residential meetings in Oxford encourage participants to explore different aspects of leadership in primary care research, identify their own development needs, form peer learning sets and establish a two year follow up programme.
The next cohort is being recruited and will attend their first residential meeting in Oxford in September 2011. Universities are invited to nominate one candidate who has demonstrated the potential to become a future leader in primary care research to apply for a place on the programme. They will usually be recently post-doctoral. Eight applicants will be selected in 2011.
The University of Oxford will cover the cost of hosting the three residential meetings for the 2011 cohort along with ongoing administration for the cohort. The participating universities will need to cover the costs of bursaries to cover travel by their participant to attend the residential meetings in Oxford. They will also need to provide bursaries to contribute to travel and accommodation for their participant’s placement(s). In addition, they will need to be willing and able to provide academic support for participants on the programme from other universities to take placements in their departments.
Selection of candidates for the programme will be competitive and limited to the best applicants for each cohort. The application form, programme information, selection criteria can be downloaded from University of Oxford Website.

Primary Care Databases Workshop
26-27 January 2012, Wellcome Collection, Euston Road, London
The use of primary care databases such as the General Practice Research Database and The Health Improvement Network has increased dramatically over recent years, with major focus areas including disease aetiology, epidemiology of a wide range of illnesses including infectious diseases and the investigation of the effects of drugs in large populations. High quality primary care data with the ever expanding availability of linked secondary data sources means a rich resource for investigators is now available.
This expansion in data resources has led to a substantial body of work in determining the best ways of using the data to arrive at valid answers. The symposium will appeal to researchers experienced in the use of primary care data and will address currently debated general and specific methodological questions. Topics to be covered in the symposium include:
A half day workshop on the second day will also allow attendees to contribute to the development of specific guidelines for reporting the results of database studies (an extension of the STROBE guidelines).
Cost
Standard delegate - £90.09 for one day attendance (either), £165.09 for both days
Student delegate - £50.09 for one day attendance (either), £90.09 for both days.
